There's something fundamentally sad about airports

Where else can you say goodbye to your loved ones
as well as your luggage? With imports and exports
everywhere all the time, K-9 dogs sniffing for drugs.

There's something to be said about a runway and plane.
How they approach each other. How they need one another.
Without the plane, the runway is but a road, a mere lane.
The airplane needs a partner, I could think of no other.

People do a lot of reading while watching and waiting.
There is no shortage of paperbacks or periodicals
to be passed about. Kiosks pop up. Coffee elevating
the experience to another level. Ever notice, God becomes

more important in the air? Especially on take off and landings.
Everyone kisses the ground or each other, thankful
to be back home without any mid air misunderstandings.
Jet lagged kids sleep in the car. I've flown a handful

of times in my life. Each time I felt like I was going to die.
Perhaps, this is an irrational fear based on nothing.
But, if had to choose a way to go, might as well be in the sky
with my family at the same time, praying and hugging
